About

REED SYSTEMS, based on over 35 years of innovation in winter maintenance procedures and input from hundreds of customers across the country, has developed a line of equipment, materials and components to meet the needs of any operation.

REED SYSTEMS pioneered the use of liquid melting agents for pre-wetting and anti-icing in the late 1970’s and developed the first successful truck mounted pre-wetting systems in North America (and in the World as far as we know) in the early 1980’s. Our equipment is still the standard for design and dependability and has been imitated by many others in the past several years. Our competitors can imitate the form of the equipment and add bells and whistles, but they cannot duplicate the 35 years of experience that comes with our equipment. Neither can they match the record of dependability during December, January and February. Nor can our record of prompt support of our equipment be matched. Our equipment is designed and proven to be dependable in the worst possible conditions. We can give numerous references to support the preceding statements.
We do not simply drop off equipment in your yard. Thirty-five years of experience comes with our equipment. We will share that experience and knowledge with you to assure the initial success of your program, and we will provide long term support to make sure the program is sustained.
All of our tanks are guaranteed for five years. All base station and mobile delivery systems are guaranteed for one year.
If you want dependable, durable equipment that is supported for the long term, please click on the topic below. If you want cheap junk that only works well in August it would be best to exit this site.

ANTI ICING
ANTI ICING Image

The term “anti icing” refers to the application of melting agents before the storm starts,
as compared to “deicing”, which refers to the application of melting agents after the precipitation has adhered to the pavement.

The number one rule in modern anti icing is “never let the snow stick to the road”.
If you do it will take several times the amount of labor, equipment and melting agent to fight the storm.

Reed Systems pioneered anti icing in the late 1970’s. At that time highway departments across the country waited until there was three or more inches of snow on the roads and then plowed and spread a mixture of 90% sand and 10% salt. The stock piles of mix were left outside and the salt dissolved and contaminated local groundwater. In colder, mountainous areas where temperatures fell below zero, the piles of sand/salt mixture froze, sometimes to a depth of three feet. We used to spray the tops and sides of the piles by hand with liquid calcium chloride to thaw the frozen layer. With two applications over two days, we could thaw three feet of frozen sand. When that mix was put on the roads we observed that it stuck to the frozen hardpack, melted much better and did not refreeze. Based on that observation we started making a small piles of 50% salt and 50% sand and applying it to historic dangerous, difficult sections of the road network as soon as the snow started. As far as I know, that was the beginning of “anti icing” in this Country. The first Towns that tried the process, were the Town of Thompson, Dick Fraser, Supt, Town of Fallsburg, John Bowers, Supt, Town of Wallkill, Joe Provost, Supt, and Town of Southeast, Dick Palmer, Supt. That process started in 1977 in South East New York State.
Reed Systems has also worked with 30 different States from Alaska to Oklahoma, to South Carolina to Maine, from Quebec to the Yukon Territory, and many major cities including New York, Boston, Washington and Charlotte to initiate their first anti icing programs and the use of liquid melting agents. We used that experience and the knowledge gained from our customers across the County to develop the liquid application systems that made their programs successful.

The reason I say that it to make you aware of the experience of Reed Systems that is built into the design of our equipment. Every other competing company has copied our equipment.

We are still learning from our customers and using that knowledge to improve our equipment.

We would appreciate the opportunity to word with you to develop and improve your anti icing program.

ANTI ICING ROADS AND STREETS
By making an application of salt and liquid melting agent prior to the onset of a storm, based on modern weather forecasting, we can substantially improve the dangerous driving conditions the occur at the beginning of a storm as the precipitation starts sticking to the pavement surface.

By applying 500 pounds of salt wet with 10 gallons of liquid melting agent in a 6 foot pattern down the middle of a two lane road, we can prevent the precipitation from sticking to the pavement and actually melt 1 inch or more of light snow as it falls. This application can be made several hours before the snow starts because the amount of liquid melting agent we apply makes the salt sticky and it sticks to the pavement. Passing traffic will grind the salt into the surface voids of the pavement and it will not be visible, and will remain there until the snow or rain starts and turns the paste into a strong brine that works its way towards the road shoulders.

A 6 cubic yard salt spreader equipped with liquid tanks will treat 24 miles of two lane road.
That means you can treat 100 miles of road with 4 trucks, 24 tons of salt and 960 gallons of liquid for $2600, or $26 per mile. How many trucks do you use now? How many tons of salt do you use? What does it cost you now?

COMMERCIAL PARING LOT MAINTENANCE
An acre (approximately 210 feet square and 5000 square yards) can be pre treated with 350 pounds of salt wet with 5 gallons of liquid melting agent for $28.00. This application can be made when the facility is closed or during periods of low use and will prevent the snow from sticking to the pavement and melt an inch or more of snow as it falls. Two more applications, in many instances will melt 3 – 4” of snow without plowing.

The salt spreaders we manufacture for commercial maintenance have large diameter spinners to cover up to 40’ spread patterns.

For both roads and parking lots a light treatment after the storm stops will prevent a refreeze at night and costly overtime response to icy spots.

TRUCK EQUIPMENT

Reed Systems offers a full line of high quality equipment, coupled with professional installation to give you excellent value for your investment. We do not perform low quality work or install inferior, poor quality equipment. Purchasing the cab and chassis and installing the necessary body, hydraulics, controls and lighting is a major investment for a business and it is our intent to give you the best value for that investment.

Our body suppliers our Galion / Godwin, Bonnell, and TBEI / Heil. All are high quality companies who produce competitively priced, durable bodies.

Reed Systems has a high tech fabrication shop where we make our own stainless steel combination dump body specifically designed for the application of salt slurry in the winter as well as standard warm weather use. We also fabricate hydraulic tanks with valve enclosures, cab shields designed to hold liquid anti icing tanks, salt spreaders and structural frames for our liquid anti icing units.

We also install a complete line of high quality snow plows. Our plow suppliers are Henke, Gledhill and Bonnell. All are high quality manufacturers and offer a full line of plows to meet all your needs.

Reed Systems has a full range of hydraulic components and controls up to sophisticated ground speed oriented controls that have GPS location and data logging and transfer capability. We also stock most replacement components and have skilled technicians to provide quality service.

The thing that is most important about our Company is our employees who take pride in the quality of work they produce. Even though we like our customers, we don’t want to see them come back with their truck because something doesn’t work properly. We can’t make a profit when we are doing the same work twice and you can’t either when your truck is in our shop. The only time we want to see you again is when you come back to pick up your next truck unless you want to stop by for lunch.
